Stencilling
Hints & Tips
Sky/Sea
Backgrounds
To achieve a sky background,
mix white and blue acrylic paint together, but loosely, i.e. so you can still
clearly see the white in amongst the blue. Don't mix it up so it becomes a
new shade as this will ruin the effect. Then with a brush take a good amount
of paint and transfer. As the paint is not properly mixed this will give you
the streaky effect that your looking for.

Other Backgrounds
You can use as much or
as little detail as you are comfortable with. As our stencils are designed
to remove free hand drawing, each set contains enough stencils to make a mural,
however you can always add in more detail if you wish. For more information
on detailed backgrounds visit our sister site Little
Monkey Murals, where you will find a step by step guide.
Detail
For the stencils detail,
use the inner sections over the top of your painted image this will show you
where to place your detail.
Surface
Use a flat, preferably
white or cream surface as your base. If you have existing wallpaper and don't
wish to remove it, you can paint over the top of this in white emulsion, leave
for a couple of days, to ensure that the wallpaper will hold, then just apply
your stencils. If your walls are plastered then ensure they are properly sealed,
before applying any paint.
Colours
Use whatever colours
you feel are appropriate, it is your mural so you can pick out existing colours
in the room or just go wild with bright fun colours.
Highlights
Why not try using luminous
paints in your murals. If your mural is outer space then you could paint the
stars and planets using luminous paints that will glow once the lights are
switched off. Or use glitter paints to highlight certain sections of your
mural, so that it sparkles in the light.
